This is the most joyful way to find new books.

Surprise yourself. With an unexpected read

Made for book lovers living overseas

Bonjour! I’m Angélique. A bookworm, former tap-dancer and curator of stories.

Born in France but living in the Netherlands, I’ve spent the last 10 years overseas.

I’ve spent my life in the middle of great stories, translating books from English to French in the publishing world. And now it’s time to share some of those hidden gems with you.

Why should your reading options be limited, just because you’re living abroad?

When you’re living abroad and trying to find books in your own language, your next read always feels so hard to find… And so you wander from bookshop to bookshop, in search of something that makes you feel at home.

Except, those English books that you do find? You’ve seen them all before. They’re mainstream. And dare I say it… a little bit boring. You crave something new. Something to surprise you. Something that’ll fill you with joy. The way reading used to do.

Just because you’re living overseas doesn’t mean you should miss out on the experiences your loved ones can get back home.

What if you had the convenience of a personal bookshop, delivered directly to your door?

I know what it feels like, not to be able to read in your own language…

It started out as three years in Singapore. Then five years in Melbourne. And now? It’s been five years in The Netherlands. And I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

Before I left to explore the world, I was living back home in France. I loved to read but I was also intimidated by contemporary literature. There were just so many books, I didn’t know where to start.

So I didn’t. I stuck to the classics. And those hidden gems remained closed off to me. Until I left, and everything changed…

When I moved overseas, it became too tricky to find books in my native French. So, to help me read more, I started reading in English. That’s how my love for English books and contemporary literature began to grow.

How to find a good book. Bestseller lists, or hidden gems?

I love written words. I studied American and British literature at university, worked in publishing and now am a translator from English to French. Words, stories and books have always been a part of my life.

But there’s so much pressure in picking a “good” book. How do you know that it’s worth your time? Let alone your money?

I’ve come to learn that the best books aren’t always the ones with the biggest marketing budgets. They’re not always at the top of bestseller lists or in bookshop windows. Instead, they’re shared through word of mouth.

So who better to ask, than the authors themselves?

That’s exactly what I do here at Joya Books. Each book box contains two hidden gems. One hand-picked by me. And the other, recommended by that author. So you can find your next best read in the most unexpected way.

Why “Joya” Books?

Joya is a word I came up with to describe what books mean to me. They bring me joy. And I consider them to be as precious as a jewel. I hope you’ll have the same experience through Joya Books too.

JOYA [ɗʒoʝɑ] n. f. — 2021 ; from joy and jewel

1a deep feeling or condition of happiness or contentment at the sight of a book. Just thinking about reading this book fills me with joya.

2a person or book resembling a jewel in preciousness, brilliance, etc. This book is the joya of my collection.

Take a look through my bookshelves… these are my most memorable reads

The book I love gifting

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

It tells the story of the last woman to be executed in Iceland. The descriptions of the scenery are breathtaking and the style compelling.

The last book that made me cry

Un jour ce sera vide by Hugo Lindenberg

I was overwhelmed by this debut novel. Sensitive, harsh and sweet all at once.

The last book that made me laugh

The Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison

This is both the most relatable and the most hilarious book I’ve ever read!

The book that I finished in one sitting*

(*Well, almost.) The Neapolitan Novels series by Elena Ferrante

I started the first book while on holiday in Italy and devoured the other three after that.

The book I’ve read several times

The murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

Such a brilliant twisted plot ! I love it so much, I’ve read it several times, in every shape and form.

The book I couldn’t finish

Swing Time by Zadie Smith

I feel ashamed! I should also mention The Autograph Man. Every time she releases a new book, I try and read it. With no success so far…!

I love everything in this concept. The engaging stories, the small attention to detail with the bookmark, the plantable confettis and the herbal teabags: a real moment of relaxation. I highly recommend it.

It’s a bit like receiving advice from a friend who would also be an author. An invitation to open the doors of his or her world, somewhere in between its own novel and the one he has chosen for you.

Birds & Bicycles, spotter of beautiful things

Who has never felt sad after finishing an extremely great book? This box is a way to cope with the sadness and get directly into another book that is different enough not to get boring but similar enough to make you continue the reading session as if it had never really stopped.

The English speaking frenchie, a French reader in English & bookseller

Angélique designed a box with her literary crush in contemporary literature and then asked authors of those novel to pick a book they like. This way, we start with what gripped Joya Books’ founder and we finish with what moved the author.
